Do I need to recert my CPR every year?
Yes… if you guard in New York. New York State requires all lifeguards to renew their CPR certification every year. Yes, I know, it’s a 2-year certification… but New York is just funky like that. Here’s the NYS DOH page explaining it in more detail.
If I’m taking a Lifeguarding Refresher class, does that cover the annual CPR requirement?
Yes it does! Both the Lifeguarding Refresher & Lifeguarding Refresher w/ Waterfront courses have a built in CPR/AED portion.
I’m still confused, what is the progression of initial certifications and recertifications?
Take a breath, this stuff can get a little confusing. Let us break it down for you:
Let’s say you take a “Lifeguarding Original-BL” class with BayerCPR in 2022 (great choice!). That certification is good for two years! As we said earlier though, you need to refresh CPR every year, so in 2023 you will come back for a “CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer” class. Now it’s 2024, your Lifeguarding cert is going to expire soon so you’ll sign up for a “Lifeguarding Refresher” course. That certification is good for two years! Once again, you need to refresh CPR/AED every year so you’ll come back in 2025 for the “CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer” class. From this point on, you’ll just come back each year alternating between a Lifeguarding Refresher and a CPR/AED class.
Here’s an example progression broken down onto a timeline:
2022: Lifeguarding Original-BL or Lifeguarding Original w/ Waterfront-BL (initial certification classes, good for 2 years)
2023: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (annual CPR/AED recert)
2024: Lifeguarding Refresher or Lifeguarding Refresher w/ Waterfront (recertification classes, good for 2 years)
2025: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (annual CPR/AED recert)
2026: Lifeguarding Refresher or Lifeguarding Refresher w/ Waterfront (recertification classes, good for 2 years)
and so on and so forth…
